Professional Standards for BC Educators
“Belief in the success of all students is at the centre of the Professional Standards for BC Educators” (BCTF 2019).
I appreciate the way that this document is presented as an organized checklist with a glossary at its conclusion. It provides clear documentation for teachers to be aware of their expectations as educators. When teachers begin a year with a new class, they establish classroom rules that set standards for respect and a safe learning environment. The staff of a school should also have accountability to themselves, their students, and each other. If teachers expect their students to abide by certain regulations, then they should be leading by example.
As educators, it is our duty to ensure that equity prevails in our classroom and school communities. In many cases, this will mean setting aside biases and opinions. The Professional Standards for BC Educators provides guidance and support to ensure student learning is safe and equitable for everyone.
